Methanol is a hazardous chemical that is highly flammable and toxic. Methanol must be properly stored, transported and used by people that have been properly trained in its handling. Methanol is extremely toxic to humans if ingested or if vapors are inhaled.
Over half of the world's methanol is used in various chemical applications. Methanol is used as a feedstock to produce chemicals such as acetic acid and formaldehyde, which in turn are used in products like adhesives, foams, plywood subfloors, solvents and windshield washer fluid.
Transportation of methanol/water solutions may take note of US exceptions for Class 3 flammable liquids, 24% or less aqueous solutions of alcohol (49 CFR 173.150) that offer opportunity to reclassify solutions to combustible liquid or to non-hazardous transport status
